THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says a blaze that heavily damaged a rural home on Monday was accidental.

Investigators determined that it originated with a faulty electrical extension cord in the living room of the house on Coppin Road on the city's southern outskirts.

The burning cord then ignited a couch.

When the owner unsuccessfully tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher, he suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation.

"The homeowner did many things right in this case," said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Paxton.

"He ensured he had working smoke alarms and took reasonable steps to extinguish the fire when it was just starting. Unfortunately he was injured when he didn't immediately evacuate" after he was unable to douse the flames, Paxton said.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue issued a reminder to residents to replace any extension cords that show signs of damage.

The fire service said it's also important to ensure no furniture or appliances are placed on top of extension cords.
