The regional coroner is awaiting results of the official investigation before deciding if an inquest will be held into a death at the Regional Hospital this week.
On Monday, a car-pedestrian collision claimed the life of a 60-year-old man on hospital property. Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service say they believe the victim intentionally threw himself in front of the vehicle.
Coroner Dr. Michael Wilson said although the man was a patient of the hospital, the circumstances do not call for a mandatory inquest.
However, a discretionary inquest can be called if it is decided that the public should be fully informed of the facts in the case, and that a jury might be able to make recommendations that would prevent a similar death in the future.
Wilson added that discretionary inquests are usually conducted at the request of the family.
It could take a couple of months before the police investigation of the incident is completed.
