(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On March 17, 2016 at approximately 12:44 p.m. the Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS) with the assistance of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a barricade male inside a Couchiching First Nation residence.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers established a secure perimeter around the area of the residence to ensure the safety of the public and the responding officers. As a result, Highway 11 was closed for almost 11 hours.
Members of the T3PS and OPP remained on scene for the duration of the incident with the support of the OPP North West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Fort Frances OPP Crime Unit and Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU).
At approximately 1:30am, the barricaded male exited his residence and was taken into police custody without incident. T3PS is continuing the investigation.
The police would like to thank the community of Couchiching First Nation for support demonstrated during the police investigation. The public is commended for their cooperation and patience as measures were taken to ensure public safety.
