Following in the footsteps of Mayor Keith Hobbs, the city’s child advocate is asking administration to prepare a report on the feasibility of a curfew for Thunder Bay’s youth.
Westfort Coun. Joe Virdiramo plans to put forth a motion on Monday asking for a report addressing the city’s right to invoke a curfew, what would be needed to implement one and how best to enforce it.
“As the child advocate for the City of Thunder Bay, I feel that we should examine all options that might better protect the safety and security of your youth, the application of a curfew being one of them,” said Virdiramo, who on Tuesday was re-elected to the police services board.
In his motion the veteran councillor asks administration to consult with relevant stakeholders, including the Thunder Bay Crime Prevention Council and Thunder Bay Police Services.
Amy Siciliano, the city’s crime prevention council co-ordinator, said it’s too early to comment.
“But definitely if it gets passed (Monday night) we will have a look at it,” she said.
The crime prevention council is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Thursday night from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Hobbs is on record saying he favours a curfew that would require teens younger than 16 to be off the streets by midnight, unless for work or other approved purposes.
Virdiramo was unavailable for further comment on Friday.
