THUNDER BAY – A rural business will get to keep its illuminated sign.

That’s a decision reached by city council on Monday night, which voted to grant a sign bylaw exemption to Mileage Auto to keep their lit up sign.

The business, which is located on Kline Road just off Mapleward Road, applied for the exemption on the grounds that their sign was directional rather than for advertisement or promotion and that lights kept the sign from being vandalized.

Consultant Don Manahan told council the sign had been repeatedly vandalized before lights had been installed. Since then the sign has not been touched and the lights assist the operation of a surveillance camera.

McInyre Coun. Trevor Giertuga said he believes the lights on the sign are necessary to direct customers to the business and prevent the sign from being vandalized.

Council unanimously rejected the initial resolution, which would have denied the exemption.

Giertuga introduced a second motion which called for the sign to remain. That was unanimously supported.
