Council approves cuts, holds off on others until next budget season

THUNDER BAY -- While some budget reductions were approved, council will wait until next year to look at others.

THUNDER BAY -- While some budget reductions were approved, council will wait until next year to look at others.

On Monday a list with around $464,000 in cuts were presented to council, part of a direction given to administration to find the money somewhere after 2015 budget deliberations. Though the list was approved, it was changed so that anything impacting 2016, like a plan to reduce rides at Chippewa Park to five days a week from seven and open the campground in the first week of June rather than the May long weekend, would be decided during next year's budget process.

Coun. Iain Angus, who made the proposal, said administration was told to find money this year, not look at the next one.

"We didn't ask them to go into the 2016 budget and make cuts there," he said.

All but two councillors agreed.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson though thought it was a bad ideas said council was just pushing its decision ahead rather than approving the cuts Monday.

"We're going to be paying for some of those things whether we want to or not," she said.

"Because we really can't make a final decision but we’re going to do it in the budget."
