THUNDER BAY -- City council will be asked to tackle both birds and business improvement, at Monday evening’s meeting.

Up for review is a proposed change to the city's bylaws regarding urban chicken coops.

As it is now, residents in the city's urban areas are not allowed to keep chickens. If the bylaw is changed, urban residents could have coops with some conditions.

Roosters are banned, there's a limit of six hens, and coops must be kept at least seven-and-a-half metres from neighbouring homes.

Meanwhile, council is also being asked to contribute up to $80,000 toward the revitalization of the city's business areas.

The city's updated Community Improvement Plan is recommending financial assistance programs for the city's downtown cores and business improvement areas.

The three programs range in cost from around $8,000 to as much as $80,000, though it would be at council's discretion which program to implement.

If passed, those items will be included for discussion during the 2017 budget.
