Council Preview: Invasive bug returns

An updated report on how to combat the Emerald Ash Borer returns to council tonight.

THUNDER BAY -- An invasive pest return to council chambers tonight.

The Emerald Ash Borer will be top of mind at city hall as city administration will return to council help in fighting the invasive beetle.

The borer was confirmed in Thunder Bay in June, a detail highlighted in a report brought to council that focused management options.

However, some councillors were unsatisfied with the report from administration, and requested a new one be drafted with additional information.

In the time since then, the ash borer has been located in new areas, including at opposite ends of the city.

The report recommends council add $550,000 to the 2017 budget to fight the borer.

Despite the updated report's return, the city's forester is not expected to be in council chambers tonight. Shelley Vescio, who seved as the city forester for more than two decades, announced her "bitter sweet" departure from the city in October.

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Thunder Bay Performing Arts Accolades Board is seeking the city's help in building a proposed Accolades gallery that would recognize the city's actors and other performers.

The group is not seeking money, but permission to build the gallery on land next to the Community Auditorium.
