THUNDER BAY -- City council returns after a two-week summer break tonight and will be looking at a pair of measures meant to help calm traffic flow.
City staff have identified Algoma Street and Cornwall Avenue as their preferred location for a new pedestrian crossover pilot project, and are asking for council approval.
The project, priced at $35,000 would install a crossover at that location before the end of September, and roll out public education programs to help inform the public how to use it.
While some residents have asked to have the crossover located near Hillcrest Park, staff say that site would be prohibitively expensive.
But Adam Krupper, the city's mobility coordinator, says cost was not the only factor they looked at.
Council will also hear a proposal from Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds, on traffic calming measures along Arundel Street.
City traffic surveys show many drivers in the area are travelling above the posted speed limit, and Foulds is asking city staff to look into the options to slow drivers down.
