THUNDER BAY -- Rookie Coun. Shelby Ch’ng is taking a new approach to gathering municipal budget input.
Ch’ng took to the Thunder Bay sub-reddit and created a post Monday titled “I am a City Councillor in Thunder Bay and heading into budget season. What would you like to see out of this budget?”
As of Tuesday morning the post had 40 comments, including a handful from the councillor’s own verified Reddit account thanking users for their contributions.
But while the venue may be unique, some of the initial feedback from residents touched on common budget-time subjects.
“Seems to me as time goes by we are paying way more for less services,” writes redditor jdeadman. “I realize things cost more with inflation but it has out stripped inflation many times over. Proper cost savings are needed without reducing services. “
While redditor Sentenced2Burn writes that “more on roads and streetlight bulbs, less on silly artistic concrete balloon animals and giant waterparks with aluminium sculptures. Lets get the fundamental stuff down pat before we start investing in auxiliaries.”
Other redditors commented on the walkability of the Northwood ward and the city’s transit system.
