THUNDER BAY -- Councillors had some questions for its solid waste division Monday night.

An annual update on the city's solid waste strategy had councillors wondering about its recycling program. Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds said the city talks a big game when it comes to recycling but maybe an overview was needed. Solid waste and recycling services manager Jason Sherband said a review is underway.

"We're close to finalizing that document," he said.

An organic waste program is in the second phase of the plan, around five years away. But Coun. Frank Pullia said the city needs to do a better job letting people know that organic waste heading the landfill is used for methane capture, which is sold back to the grid.

Sherband said many cities don't have a landfill. Those places are charged tonnage fees to have waste hauled by trucks to other landfills, which puts more pressure on it to have organic waste programs. Thunder Bay doesn't have that issue.
