Court Street Safeway closes for rebranding (3 Photos)

Conversion to discount FreshCo outlet will take four to five months.

THUNDER BAY — The signs are down and the shelves are being emptied at the Safeway store on Court Street.

The owner, Empire Company Limited, closed the store on Saturday to make preparations for a conversion to FreshCo, its discount grocery banner.

Empire has said it expects renovations will take four to five months.

The pharmacy will soon be relocated temporarily to a trailer across the street.

However, as of Monday the pharmacy remained in operation inside the store while workers continued to get the trailer ready.

Empire continues to operate two other Safeway locations in Thunder Bay.
