THUNDER BAY – Another life has been claimed by COVID-19 in the Thunder Bay District, bringing the total death toll to 27.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced the newest fatality Saturday, along with 14 new confirmed cases.
The death was not linked to an outbreak, the health unit said, but declined to share additional information out of respect for the family's privacy.
The number of active cases fell significantly to 145, thanks to 54 cases now considered resolved. Active cases had hit an all-time high of 186 on Friday.
Half of Saturday’s cases were related to institutional outbreaks, with five new cases at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and two at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. Both have experienced major outbreaks, with over 60 inmates and staff infected at each facility.
One other case was related to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, three were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case, while an exposure category for the remaining three was pending.
There was one individual hospitalized with the virus Saturday.
There have been a total of 966 cases confirmed in the Thunder Bay District, with 794 resolved, 145 active, and 27 deaths.
An outbreak at the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home has accounted for 23 of the 27 fatalities. The home remains in outbreak more than 10 weeks after it was first declared, with two active cases as of Saturday.
