THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has declared a COVID-19 outbreak after detecting a third case at Sherbrooke Public School, nearly a week into a period of virtual learning for all local schools.

The health unit previously announced cases at the Northwood public elementary school on Feb. 27 and March 2, when the Lakehead District School Board noted there was not yet evidence the virus had spread at the school.

That changed with the discovery of a third case, which the health unit said was deemed to have been acquired in the school setting.

“Consistent with provincial guidelines, an outbreak is declared in a school when there are two or more COVID-19 cases in students or staff that can be linked within a school setting,” the health unit said.

The health unit continues to monitor the situation “until the full risk period has passed,” it said Friday.
