COVID-19 outbreak declared at Fort Frances hospital

Four patients at La Verendrye General Hospital have tested positive.

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at the La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, after four patients tested positive.

The Northwestern Health Unit and Riverside Health Care Facilities announced the outbreak in a release Tuesday evening, after warning the public Saturday of a suspected outbreak.

Staff will wear an N95 mask while working in areas affected by the outbreak as part of enhanced procedures, said Riverside Health.

Workers were already being tested twice per week, while the hospital began testing inpatients after declaring the suspected outbreak, the agency added.

Visits are limited, with obstetric, pediatric, and emergency patients allowed one caregiver, while palliative patients are permitted two at a time.

“We recognize the immense responsibility our hospital, long term care and community service team’s carry each day in their efforts to provide both quality and safe care,” Riverside Health said in its statement. “While the coming weeks and months ahead will bring further challenges, we appreciate the support of our patients, residents, clients, families, staff, physicians, board and the public as we recognize the role we play in protecting our communities.”
