THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at I.R. Churchill Elementary School.

The school is located at 2040 Walsh Street East, and is operated by the Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation.

In a statement to the school community, the TBDHU said that following a public health investigation, it has reason to believe an individual associated with the school who recently tested positive, acquired the infection in the school.

It said it is actively investigating the situation, and follow-up and testing of other individuals in the impacted cohorts is ongoing.

The statement said the announcement of the outbreak does not mean the school is closing.

Only those staff and students in classrooms identified as having had close contact with the case are currently excluded from attending school.

The TBDHU said it is working closely with I.R. Churchill Elementary to manage the situation.
