THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s regional hospital has reported a COVID-19 outbreak in a third area, along with a slight increase in the number of patients admitted with the virus.

An outbreak was declared Wednesday in the Transitional Care Unit-Cedar, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre reported.

Two other areas are currently in outbreak, including the 3A Unit (declared Jan. 4) and Adult Mental Health Unit (declared Jan. 9).

Provincial guidelines require an outbreak to be declared when there are two or more confirmed cases within 14 days in the same area, and both cases could reasonably have been acquired in hospital.

There were 23 people in hospital with COVID-19 as of Wednesday, an increase of two from the day before. The number being treated in ICU held steady at six.

Twelve of those hospitalized are residents of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, according to health unit data, with the remainder coming from further afield in Northwestern Ontario.

The TBDHU reported a 73rd COVID-related death Wednesday, along with 104 new confirmed cases.
