THUNDER BAY – COVID-19 outbreaks were declared at two north end schools on Monday, Hammarskjold High School and St. Margaret elementary.

Two cases had been confirmed as of Monday evening at Hammarskjold, and three at St. Margaret, according to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

All but one of those had been previously reported, but the health unit said it had now discovered evidence in both cases that the virus had likely spread in the school setting.

Those identified as close contacts will be contacted by public health, the agency said, while impacted classes and cohorts had been dismissed. Both schools otherwise remained open.

A single case had been reported at Hammarskjold on Saturday, and the health unit had identified one case at St. Margaret Friday, and two more Sunday.
