THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reports 116 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in its service area.

In an update to its COVID dashboard posted Wednesday morning, TBDHU said the current caseload stands at 307, which is 35 fewer than what was reported on Tuesday.

However the COVID-19 positivity test rate has increased slightly.

During the week of Feb. 13. to 19, 25 per cent of the tests that were conducted for the virus came back positive, compared with 23.7 per cent the previous week and 17.9 per cent two weeks ago.

Wednesday's update showed that 45 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 across the district, including 13 in intensive care.

The day before, the numbers were 44 and 12 respectively.

TBDHU continues to caution that since testing since the start of the new year has been limited to the most vulnerable individuals, and to people associated with the highest-risk settings, confirmed cases significantly underestimate the true number of people with COVID-19 in the Thunder Bay district.

In the service area of the Kenora-based Northwestern Health Unit, there are currently 308 active high-risk COVID cases, the bulk of which are in the Sioux Lookout and Fort Frances health hubs.

NWHU reported Wednesday that the current seven-day positivity test rate is 29.1 per cent.
