THUNDER BAY -- Police are investigating a crash between a taxicab and one of their cruisers.

The crash took place on Simpson Street near Southern Avenue and involved the taxi and a Thunder Bay Police Service vehicle at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Thunder Bay Police Traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter said there was an ongoing call, a Mac’s convenience store robbery, at the time of the collision but it was too early in the investigation to say if that was a factor.

“The traffic unit is currently investigating it and they should probably have the results by the end of the week,” he said Friday afternoon.

A section of Simpson Street between Northern and Alexandra was closed immediately following the crash, but has since reopened.

The occupants of both vehicles attended Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The taxi did not have a fare at the time of the crash.

This latest crash is third in the past 12 months to involve a city police vehicle.

An officer was charged with running a red light in March 2014 after a crash at the intersection of Victoria and Waterloo Street and a month later there was a crash at the intersection of Arthur and Franklin Streets.

The police went before city council last September requesting $88,000 from the Crime Prevention Fund to help replace the damaged cruisers.

At that meeting Chief J.P. Levesque said insurance only reimbursed 50 per cent of the vehicle cost.

Porter said the service will launch an internal review.
