The OPP have confirmed a fatal plane crash near Pickle Lake.

Three people are dead following the crash that took place shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. Pickle Lake mayor Roy Hoffman said he arrived at the scene around 2 a.m.

“We saw some lights coming out of the bush,” he said.

Hoffman couldn’t speculate on what caused the crash other than the fact that the weather was good last night.

“I don’t’ think it was weather related.”

He said the plane wasn’t local and he didn’t think any of the victims were from Pickle Lake.

A survivor was taken to Winnipeg with unknown injuries.

Transportation Safety Board regional manager Peter Hildebrand said they’re still not sure where the plane departed from and no flight plan was filed with Nav Canada.

They’ve sent a team of investigators to the crash site, which is about 1.8 miles east of the Pickle Lake airport.

The privately registered Lake LA-250 aircraft was inbound to Pickle Lake around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The plane reported a final approach around 8:30 p.m. and the Thunder Bay flight service station attempted further contact with the plane shortly after that time but received no answer.

The aircraft’s emergency locator signal was received soon after.

Hildebrand said it’s too early to know the cause of the crash but they have investigators on site to determine that.

“They’re going to find out all they can about the crash site … and the aircraft itself,” he said in a phone interview with CKPR.

Police continue to investigate.

The identity of the victims have not been revealed.
