One woman is dead after a Wednesday afternoon highway crash.
Officers with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP responded to a two-car collision just west of Highway 102 on Highway 11/17 around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police have identified the woman as 60-year-old Deborah Schneider from Kenora.
Provincial Const. Diana Cole said one car was heading westbound while the other was traveling in the opposite direction.
A woman in the westbound vehicle was taken away from the crash scene by an air ambulance after it landed directly on the highway.
She later died from her injuries.
The driver of the vehicle traveling eastbound suffered what police described as non-life threatening injuries as did the male occupant of the westbound car.
Cole said the investigation will continue and that she doesn’t know yet whether charges will be laid or how the crash occurred.
“Our technical collision investigators are going to be investigating that,” Cole said. “It’s still too soon in the investigation to determine anything of that nature.”
While traffic was diverted through Sunshine Loop, transport truck traffic had to wait until the highway reopens.
Cole didn’t know how long that would be but some truckers waiting at the Petro Canada near Sistonen’s Corner said they were told it could be as long as eight hours.
