THUNDER BAY -- Students at Crestview Public School helped one of their favourite visitors celebrate a milestone Wednesday.
Archie, a 13-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has been working as a therapy dog for 11 years. He's been visiting schools, seniors homes and hospitals and on Wednesday made his 500 th trip a visit to Crestview.
Archie has helped a countless number of students gain confidence in reading during his three years at the school. Jo-Ann Giertuga, Principal of Crestview Public School, said that's not the only thing he's helped students accomplish. He's also teaching them about respect.
Giertuga said the children absolutely love Archie and staff at the school have noticed how calm the students become when he's around.
Students from Junior Kindergarten to grade two celebrated with a gift for Archie and cake for themselves.
Handler Gail Bailey said along with elementary and high schools, Archie visits Lakehead University and Confederation College prior to exam week to help students with stress.
