THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews are on scene on Saturday night battling a fire at an Almira Avenue residence.
Thick smoke could be seen pouring from the home as firefighters worked to contain the fire. A single male occupant was located outside the home. He was inside when the fire broke out, but self-evacuated. He was later taken to hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.
A cat was also rescued from the home.
Care was provided to the man while fire personnel conducted an interior search.
A second alarm was called to the semi-rural location and the fire was knocked down, allowing the next arriving crews to assist with rapid fire control, keeping it contained mostly to a kitchen area, with some damaged into the attic space.
The home suffered significant fire, smoke and water damage. Crews remained on scene for several hours to completely extinguish the fire.
The scene is being held until Thunder Bay Fire Rescue completes its investigation and determines the cause.
Six pumpers, one aerial ladder and a command unit responded to the incident, which was first reported at about 10:43 p.m. on Saturday night.
