Residents have another chance to nominate their favourite crime fighter, and with it another chance to win $1,000 to make the community safer.
Mayor Keith Hobbs announced the city would be taking nominations for the second community safety and crime prevention awards. The awards last year recognized the efforts of nine groups and individuals who made a difference in the community through programming and services that promoted a safe community as well as crime prevention.
After a successful first trial, Hobbs said they wanted to bring the awards back.
He said it’s important to recognize the efforts of those in the community who are trying to make a difference.
“It’s proper and right that we recognize people that take an initiative,” Hobbs said.
Programs like Evergreen: A Community United and the Vale Community Centre have all stepped up to help with crime prevention, he said.
While it’s still the responsibility of police to handle serious crimes, Hobbs said it’s up to the community to help with prevention.
“We’re trying to get the community involved,” he said. “This isn’t just a police problem; it’s also a community problem.”
The categories for the awards are:
• Community hero award – for an outstanding individual effort that contributes to a safer community
• Business award – for any business that has contributed to community safety through partnering with a local group or organization
• Media award – for outstanding contribution by an individual in media relations or media group who has raised awareness and understanding of safety and crime prevention
• Education award – for an individual in the field of education for raising awareness of, or leading a project toward improved community safety or crime prevention
• Enforcement professional award – for outstanding contribution by an enforcement professional
• Outstanding community project award – for outstanding results in community safety or crime prevention through partnership and collaboration.
A prize of $1,000 will be awarded to each organization recognized to be used for community safety initiatives.
Nominations will be take in until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 4. Awards will be presented at city council on Nov. 5.
