Cross-Atlantic voyage ‘life changing,’ will not break record

They won't be breaking the record for the fastest row across the Atlantic Ocean, but local author Charles Wilkins and his crewmates are now close to completing what he calls a life-changing experience.
They won't be breaking the record for the fastest row across the Atlantic Ocean, but local author Charles Wilkins and his crewmates are now close to completing what he calls a life-changing experience.

Wilkins, 61, and his team of 16 rowers pushed off from the Moroccan coast in mid-January, attempting to row 3,000 miles to Barbados. They were trying to do it in 35 days, which would have been a world record, but after several setback and delays they're now expected to arrive on March 3 – more than 40 days of rowing.

Documentary film-maker Kelly Saxberg said they have been capturing the epic adventure on film, including a scary incident when Wilkins injured his leg with an oar after a huge wave hit the boat.

Saxberg spoke to Wilkins by satellite phone a few days ago, and says the crew remains upbeat, despite not breaking the cross-Atlantic speed record.
