THUNDER BAY – Mike Ranta, who annually makes long summertime canoe expeditions and is on his second cross-country voyage, has lost his long-time travel partner and dog, Spitzii.

Ranta began his canoe trip 101 days ago at the ocean’s edge in Stevenson, B.C., and had hopes of completing his journey fast than he did in 2014, which took him 214 days.

Ranta was paddling with his dog, who routinely accompanies him on his voyages, in honour of homeless veterans.

Sunday evening Ranta made an update on his Facebook page explaining that his canoe flipped. While he didn’t lose anything, Spitzii ran off into the woods and Ranta has since been unable to find him.

“I’m really worried because there’s a lot of dangers from him lurking in these woods,” he wrote. “I need some positive energy here and need to find by boy. I’m lost and having a hard time dealing with this.”

Ranta told his Facebook followers that he would set up camp for the night in hopes of finding his dog. Unfortunately, as of 7:30 a.m. Monday Ranta posted that the dog is still missing.

“OK still no sign of him! My voice is shot and can't yell anymore! I'm going out to see if I can hear him barking at anything! I'll keep you posted!”
