Cyclospora hasn't hit Thunder Bay, could arrive eventually

THUNDER BAY -- While a parasite hasn't come to town, the health unit isn't ruling out its arrival. Cyclospora is a parasite that causes a type of food poisoning and is considered a low-risk illness.

Cyclospora is a parasite that causes a type of food poisoning and is considered a low-risk illness. There are now several dozen cases of the typically tropical bug across the country with, an outbreak that researchers have yet to account for.

Thunder Bay District Health Unit infectious disease manager Diana Gowanlock said it hasn't shown up in the city but seniors and people with health complications should be warned that the illness could eventually hit Thunder Bay.

The illness can be cured with antibiotics.
