UPDATED: Minnesota Highway 61 reopens after bridge accident

Travellers faced lengthy detour on gravel roads

Heading into one of the busier weekends for road traffic, an accident blocked travel on Highway 61 in the Taconite Harbor, Minnesota area.

The state Department of Transportation closed the road late Thursday after an inactive railroad bridge that crosses the highway was damaged by a truck passing underneath.

DOT officials cited concerns about the instability of the bridge as the reason for the closure.

It left motorists facing a detour of nearly 45 kilometres, mostly on a gravel surface.

Work crew with cranes spent the night removing the obsolete bridge.

The project was completed by 1:00 pm EDT, allowing Minnesota authorities to reopen the highway to normal traffic.
