Date still up in the air on fireworks show

Mother Nature’s foggy arrival on Canada Day put a damper on the city’s fireworks display, but the show will go on.

Doug Henry, the city’s events supervisor, said the city is targeting a Summer in the Parks date later this month to fire off the remaining fireworks, which were cut off midway through the show last Friday because of low-hanging clouds.

"We thought we had a bit of a window to shoot off the fireworks, but then the fog did close in. We tried them, but you just couldn’t see them, so we stopped the show," Henry said on Monday afternoon.

Between a third to half the cache, or about $10,000 worth, were shot off before city officials could contact the pyro-technicians setting the fireworks off.

"We tried to contact him, but he was shooting the show. So by the time we reached him and said we could not see the fireworks, that’s when he shut it down. But it takes some time to do that," Henry said, adding he hasn’t heard a lot of negative feedback yet.

"People were understanding that the weather did not co-operate and we’ll look at doing a show another day."

At least one city councillor has suggested this upcoming weekend, during the Thunder Bay Blues Festival, would be an ideal time.

Henry isn’t ruling anything out at this point in time, but said permit deadlines are rapidly approaching.

Choosing this weekend would also not allow anyone not holding a Blues Festival pass to enjoy them from that portion of Marina Park.

Henry said they’re doing an inventory of the remaining fireworks to see if there’s a need to purchase more to beef up the revised display.
