Thunder Bay had its mildest December on record in 2015, Environment Canada has confirmed.

But that doesn’t mean this area will have a more comfortable than usual January.

Environment Canada spokesman Geoff Coulson said the average temperature in Thunder Bay during December was -3 C, beating the previous record for a December that was set in 2014.

“One of the factors in play was the very strong El Nino that’s going on right now,” Coulson said during an interview with CKPR Radio Monday. “These El Nino events happen every few years but this one has been particularly strong.”

But that El Nino won’t lead to a mild start to January. Coulson warns that a cold snap could hit this area as early as next weekend.

While the current Environment Canada long-range forecast doesn’t’ show any extreme cold temperatures during the day, the nighttime low is expected to reach -20 C Saturday night into Sunday morning.
