Deer hunt, trailer park on council agenda

The plan to permit hunting deer with a bow and arrow in certain areas of the city will soon be up for discussion by the Police Services Board. Council is set to give final approval to the by-law Monday night.

The plan to permit hunting deer with a bow and arrow in certain areas of the city will soon be up for discussion by the Police Services Board.

Council is set to give final approval to the by-law Monday night. A report on ways to control and minimize the deer population first came before council last winter.  That led to a new by-law restricting the feeding of deer in city limits. Complaints over nuisance deer have been increasing in recent years and so have motor vehicle collisions.  Roughly 200 deer a year are killed by vehicles in Thunder Bay.

Coun. Joe Virdiramo, who is also the chair of the Police Services Board, said he is personally not in favour of killing deer.  But the over-population is something that needs to be addressed.

Council will also hear a deputation Monday night about the proposed sale of Hill Court Estates.  Many residents with ties to the trailer park want the city to keep it in the city's possession.
