Police have recovered the body of a man who died when the groomer he was operating crashed through thin ice on Deer Lake on Friday.
Red Lake OPP said 56-year-old Henry Meekis was unable to get out of the vehicle after it went under water at about 1 p.m.
The OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit was brought in on Dec. 22, after being requested by the Deer Lake First Nation's Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service detachment, and Meekis’s body was recovered the next morning.
Police are warning the public to stay off local waterways unless ice thickness levels are known, stating there have been several cases of vehicles and snow machines going through the ice in the past couple of weeks.
