Deliberately-set fire gives new trees a head start

MNRF aerial photos tell the story

Before and after photos show the effectiveness of a prescribed burn conducted on Friday by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

MNRF crews set fire to the debris created by a blowdown during a storm at Sakwite Lake northeast of Fort Frances, and east of Highway 502.

The ministry says that, from an ecological standpoint, burning away the fine and medium fuels of storm-damaged trees allows for better access to sunlight and creates a nutrient-rich seed bed for aerial seeding that will be conducted over the year this winter.

Prescribed burns give new trees a head-start in getting rooted in the ground, as they don't have to grow beneath a deep map of blowdown.
