THUNDER BAY – The city’s worst kept secret has been revealed– Delta Hotels and Resorts will be the waterfront hotelier.
Officials with both the city and the Canadian-based hotelier made the announcement during a news conference Wednesday morning. Rumours that Delta would be named as the waterfront hotelier began as early as 2011.
Ken Greene, president and CEO of Delta, said the level of speculation goes to show how much people cared that a four-star hotel was coming into Prince Arthur’s Landing.
“This is significant,” Greene said. “Delta is growing at a decent pace and we want to accelerate our growth. A market place like Thunder Bay, which is growing, and has great business drivers too is a great opportunity for Delta.”
Greene added that every negotiation is tough and sometimes it can take a long time to make sure everything is done thoroughly. He said they tried to get the deal done as quickly as possible.
Some of the features for the 150-room hotel, which is scheduled to be open in 2014, will include a restaurant with an outside terrace, a fitness centre and a conference facility.
Of the 150 rooms, 18 will be penthouse suites, and 10 will feature balconies.
The hotel will be built alongside the two waterfront condominiums and is expected to create more than a hundred jobs.
“Thunder Bay is such a great destination for people to come,” he said. “I think it’s an undiscovered gem in many ways but not for very long.”
Gisele MacDonald, president and CEO for Resolve Group, said she was glad that all the secrets could be put to a stop.
“It’s Delta and we’re very, very pleased to have made that announcement,” MacDonald said.
“(Delta is) Canada’s brand of choice by the travelers and employees, I think to get them interested in a secondary market, to get a four-star, full service hotel to Thunder Bay is just fabulous.”
MacDonald said they chose Delta because they had a strong track record developing tourism in communities.
Delta will be the first four-star, upscale hotel in the city.
This is a developing story. More information will be published soon.
