THUNDER BAY, ON, September 27, 2016 – On September 23 and 24, the John Andrews Foundation Dental Clinic at Confederation College partnered with the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital to host the Cleft Lip and Palate/Craniofacial Northern Outreach Dental Clinic. Over the course of two days this clinic saw 87 clients from the Thunder Bay area and region as far west as the Manitoba border. Clients were made up of children and young adults with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies.

Clients were screened by four out-of-town dental specialists, including:

  • Paediatric Orthodontists Dr. Shervin Abbaszadeh and Dr. Bryan Thompson;
  • Prosthodontist Dr. Robert Carmichael; and
  • Oral Surgeon Dr. Marshall Freilic

These specialists were joined by out-of-town Speech and Language Pathologist Rebecca Perlin and local Orthodontist Dr. Mark Vukovich, all of whom collaborated to provide the clinic and offer Confederation’s Dental Hygiene students with the opportunity to assist and observe.

“This is an excellent example of inter-professionalism at work, which provided our Dental Hygiene students with a valuable learning experience,” said Trudi Enstrom, Program Co-coordinator for Dental Hygiene at Confederation.

"We are also proud to facilitate this kind of care being delivered in our community."

This is the third year the partnership has brought the clinic to campus. Annual outreach clinics are also held in Timmins, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

All clinics are staffed by a trans-disciplinary team of dental and medical specialists and healthcare professionals who work in partnership with local community professionals.
