THUNDER BAY – Despite circulating rumours the federal government has nixed support for a new event centre, city officials say the process to find support from senior levels of government remains ongoing.

Responding to an email Monday morning, city manager Tim Commisso refuted speculation Ottawa had already reached a decision to deny the city’s funding application.

He said the city is continuing to seek matching contributions from both the federal and provincial governments.

Commisso, along with Mayor Keith Hobbs and a number of city councillors, are in Toronto this week for the Ontario Good Roads Association and Rural Ontario Municipal Association joint conference.

He said the local delegation will meet with provincial ministers at that conference, with the event centre being a topic of conversation.

Commisso added he expects to report back with an update at the end of March.
