Police say the driver who killed a two-year-old girl on the city’s south side Tuesday probably didn’t know what he had done.

Kylie McKay, 2, was run over Tuesday afternoon near her North Vickers Street home by a male relative who was dropping her off.

"The driver, we believe at this stage, may not have been aware that he had actually run over the child and drove back to his own residence," police spokesman Chris Adams said Wednesday afternoon.

While police had originally thought it was a hit-and-run, once the man was arrested at his home and interviews were done, that call was dropped.

Because the man has not been charged, Adams did not want to say what his relationship to Kylie was due to privacy issues.

“At this point he has not been charged with anything it’s still an open investigation," Adams said.

"It’s a very horrible thing that you really cannot imagine what you’d be going through so we can only speculate that it’s just a devastating tragedy for the family and certainly for anyone that’s been involved."

A memorial had been set up outside of the North Vickers Street home Wednesday afternoon.

Relatives and friends held each other, some in tears, while standing around flowers and stuffed animals dropped off by neighbours and people passing by.
