Confederation College’s Digital Media Production program launched its new studio space with a live online broadcast Thursday.

THUNDER BAY – Confederation College’s Digital Media Production program was excited to launch its new studio space with a live online broadcast Thursday.

The broadcast helped to showcase the upgraded space along with its state-of-the-art equipment. Students interviewed various College and community members, as well as their fellow classmates.

“Our new web-station facilities allow us to blend traditional media with new media,” said Michele McManus, DMP program coordinator. “To be successful in today’s digital media industry, having knowledge of both types of media is crucial. Though the tools we use to share stories have evolved with technology, the art and science behind how we communicate and create content has remained constant. With our new studio and equipment, students can take their stories and ideas to a variety of platforms, allowing them to effectively communicate and target their messages to specific audiences. All of this will position them for success as they pursue careers in the industry.”

The studio’s advanced infrastructure allows the students to work seamlessly with the latest technologies such as 4K and high definition robotic cameras, automation packages, switchers and mixers.

Adam Whitney is close to completing his first year of the DMP program and he is loving working with the new equipment. “Getting to work with the state-of-the-art equipment and having professional teachers who've worked in the field has been amazing,” he said. “Getting to experiment and build my skills has been wonderful.”

Whitney is part of the inaugural DMP cohort, set to graduate in the spring of 2020. The Studio Launch event also served to highlight the accomplishments of the first year of this exciting program. “We worked hard to create a future-thinking and engaging program for all kinds of learners,” said McManus. “Having almost completed the first year of this new program, we are confident that our graduates will be well prepared for a range of dynamic careers, including ones that don’t even exist yet.”

Richard Gemmill, Dean of the School of Business, Hospitality and Media Arts, is impressed by this new space and knows that students have been making the most of all that it has to offer. "It has been a team effort to bring this new space to life, but I must commend the DMP faculty for their leadership in this journey and congratulate them on their impressive efforts," he said.

Confederation College’s Digital Media Production program teaches students how to be effective in today’s ever-changing digital media world. They learn how to connect with users through blogs, vlogs, and live interactive shows. The program covers the basics of marketing, branding and promotions that are often intertwined with today’s content creation. Students also explore social journalism, bringing grass-root stories to new media platforms.
