DINORWIC, Ont. – The investigation of a death near Dryden has turned up human remains in a fire-damaged home in nearby Dinorwic.

Police are now investigating the death, announced Saturday, as a homicide.

A release issued by Ontario Provincial Police Sunday evening did not indicate whether the remains had yet been identified.

Officers with the OPP's Dryden detachment responded to a call regarding a disturbance in Dinorwic, about 30 kilometres east of Dryden, shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Police and paramedics arrived to discover a male with life-threatening injuries, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased has been identified as Richard McLeod of Dinorwic.

Officers also responded to a residential fire on a neighbouring property, announcing Sunday they had located human remains in the fire-damaged residence.

“Police do not believe there is any risk to public safety at this time,” the OPP said Sunday.

However, an increased presence of police and fire investigators will remain in the area.

Numerous agencies are participating in the investigation, including the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Branch, the provincial Office of the Fire Marshall, Ontario Forensic Pathology Services, and the office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

The OPP ask members of the public who have information relevant to the investigation to contact police at 1-888-310-1122, or submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
