For the fourth time in the history of the community, Fort William First Nation has bestowed the honorary title of chief to Rev. Larry Kroker.
The community official named Kroker of St. Anne’s Church as an honorary chief at a ceremony on top of Mount McKay on Saturday. The distinctive title was given in recognition of Kroker’s 40 years of service to the community.
The title required the approval of Fort William Chief Peter Collins and the band council.
Kroker said he felt touched to that kind of recognition.
“I have known this people for so long so I feel really happy,” Kroker said. “I started off teaching in a high school for several years in Toronto and Montreal but that wasn’t what I wanted to do as a priest. This is where I seem to fit.”
Head band Coun. Ian Bannon said Kroker showed dedication to the community through his years of work. Bannon said for someone to have that honour bestowed they have to show strong dedication and commitment to the community.
The distinction isn’t something that’s given out lightly. Bannon said he believes the last time they gave that honour was several years ago.
“It has been many years since this practice has been done,” Bannon said. “I think Kroker is the fourth to have been given the title of honorary chief in the community. It is not something that is handed out as an annual thing at all. It is taken with high regard. It is a very rare occurrence.”
