The city has a request for residents this spring – Don’t be trashy.

In celebration of Civic Pride Month the city launched a new campaign to keep Thunder Bay clean. With the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures litter is becoming a serious concern, so the city formally introduced the 'Don't Be Trashy' campaign Wednesday.

The campaign encourages individuals to take pride in Thunder Bay and to keep it clean.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson said the new campaign focuses on inspiring Thunder Bay residents to clean up the city.

"As an individual you want to be proud of what your city looks like, so this new campaign will hopefully excite people to say 'I want Thunder Bay to be really clean, beautiful and of course green,'" Johnson said.

Reusable shopping bags with Don't Be Trashy logos were handed out at city hall during the launch.

Starting the first week of April billboards, videos, radio, print, online and transit advertising will show up in an ongoing effort to reinforce the importance of a clean Thunder Bay.

"Do not litter," Johnson said, explaining the objective of the 'Don't Be Trashy' campaign.

"People drop things whenever they feel they need to drop it instead of saying, 'I'm going to walk a couple more steps to drop it in a trash can' or 'I'm going to take it home.'"

Johnson said the campaign will run until everybody starts picking up all their garbage.
