More than two dozen city police officers had to be called into action Friday night to deal with what has been described as an out-of-control party.

Police were contacted about the party around midnight in the Hacquoil Road area, just off Highway 61.  Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service say nearly 1,000 young people were in attendance and many of them appeared to be intoxicated.

Cars lining the roadways in the area were also causing traffic problems.

When police moved in to break things up, several of the party-goers turned belligerent. In one instance, an officer was almost struck in the head by a small boulder.

The gate at the nearby Founders Museum was rammed by someone who was leaving the party.

Police say such gatherings create major public safety concerns.

The large police response required also restricted the ability of police to respond to other calls in the city.
