Ten years after Steve Hajdinjak took his own life, his friends and family released butterflies at the Dragon Boat Races in his name for the last time.

The 26-year-old had been active in the sport for a few years before his death and the team One In A Million has raced in his name ever since.

"Lots of his friends are getting older. They're not 26 anymore," said Steve's mother Margaret.

"I think 10 years was a good run for our team and it's something to be proud of."

Margaret spoke strongly as butterflies were released in waves representing courage, grief, hope and love. She intends to continue her activism regarding de-stigmatizing suicide through the Out Of The Darkness Walk For Suicide Awareness.

"If my son had died in a car accident, I'd have more people coming up and saying, 'sorry about your son.' When it's suicide, there's a fear with that because there's such a stigma about that," she said.

"He died from depression. That's what I beleive it was. He suffered from depression and the pain got too much for him. He thought that was his only way out of the pain."

She added the stigma around asking for help when it comes to mental heatlh, particularly for men, needs to change.

Even without the One In A Million team behind her, Margaret hopes to continue the butterfly ceremony as a memorial to people lost to suicide and those who suffer from mental illness.
