PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION, ON — A drinking water advisory for residents of Pikangikum First Nation has been rescinded.
It was actually cancelled on Sept. 19, but Indigenous Services Canada waited until Oct. 3 to make a public announcement.
The advisory for the fly-in community of about 2,800, located 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, had been in place since December 2016.
A government news release said the community's recent completion of repairs to its water treatment system, and to the back-up power system, restored the supply of clean drinking water.
A drinking water advisory is considered "long-term" when it has been in place for over a year.
In November 2015 there were 105 long-term advisories on public drinking water systems on-reserve across Canada.
According to the government, a total of 71 advisories have been resolved since then, but 35 new ones have been added.
Ottawa has committed to ending all long-term advisories for public water systems on-reserve by 2021.
