Driver charged after fatal crash

Police have charged the driver with impaired operation of a vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, failing to stop at an accident resulting in death, failure to comply with a release order, and failure to comply with a probation order.

THUNDER BAY — The driver of the vehicle involved in a fatal collision in the Boulevard Lake area faces multiple charges.

Thunder Bay police on Friday confirmed that 35-year-old David Thomas Edward Anderson has been charged with impaired operation of a vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, failing to stop at an accident resulting in death, failure to comply with a release order, and failure to comply with a probation order.

The incident happened just after 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning, when a vehicle struck a tree in the area of Lyon Boulevard and Rita Street. 

Police said the driver had fled the scene of the crash, leaving the female passenger trapped inside the vehicle. The 34-year-old woman, whose name has not been publicly released, was taken to hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Officers followed a trail of blood from the crash site to a nearby home, police said.

Police allege the driver was travelling "at an extreme rate of speed" on Lyon Boulevard East, which had a posted speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour,.

Anderson appeared in court on Friday and remains in custody with a future appearance date scheduled.
