THUNDER BAY - A 17-year-old driver is facing several charges after striking the side of a Thunder Bay school on Friday.

A media release issued by Thunder Bay Police Service on Saturday said police were called to Hammarskjold High School on Friday at 12:50 p.m. following a reported collision between a motor vehicle and neighbouring St. Pius X School.

Police determined a 17-year-old male was driving a vehicle through the parking lot of the high school and turning to exit onto Clarkson Street when he lost control and struck the corner of the building.

The driver and a 14-year-old female passenger were not injured and there were no reports of injuries to anyone inside the school.  The building received minor damage, while the car received extensive damage.

The driver had a G1 license and the vehicle was newly purchased and did not have proper registration or insurance.

Police charged the driver with operating a motor vehicle with no insurance, driving a vehicle without a permit, and G1 driving with no G driver in vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
