An alleged repeat offender impaired driver spent the night in jail after attempting to flee police at a high rate of speed overnight Monday.

At about 2 a.m. police attempted to stop a vehicle they say was being driven erratically along Court Street. The driver of the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed, police say, but ultimately was held up by traffic at a red light on Cumberland and Water streets.

Police say the driver, who they charged with impaired driving, drive over 80 milligrams of alcohol, failure to stop for police and breach of undertaking, was discovered to already be on an undertaking from a previous impaired driving charge issued this past January.

That charge is still before the courts.

The suspect was held in custody overnight and is expected to appear in video court Monday at 11 a.m.
