THUNDER BAY — Police have laid multiple charges against a motorist after a hit-and-run on the south side of Thunder Bay on Monday morning.

The 47-year-old man allegedly left the scene of a collision involving two parked vehicles, but was located blocks away, slumped unconscious behind the steering wheel, police said in a media release on Monday.

The Thunder Bay Police Service said the incident occurred about 7 a.m. in the 500 block of Kingsway.

After witnesses informed investigating officers the driver might have been impaired, a suspect vehicle was located in a parking lot in the 600 block of Arthur Street West a short time later.

When he was awakened, police said officers noted signs of impairment, and observed paraphernalia in the vehicle consistent with drug use.

At the police station, the man refused to provide a blood sample, according to police.

Charges include dangerous driving, impaired driving, failure to stop after a collision and driving while prohibited.

The accused was released from custody with a promise to appear in court at a future date.

TBPS did not release the man's identity.
