Driver of van charged following weekend crash that killed motorcyclist

(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Saturday, July 18, 2015 at approximately 11:46 am, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Superior North EMS and Shuniah Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Highway 587 and Highway 11/17 in the Municipality of Shuniah.

The driver of a Dodge Caravan was north bound on Highway 587 when the driver approached the intersection of Highway 11/17. The driver stopped and then proceeded onto Highway 11/17.

As the driver proceeded onto Highway 11/17, she observed an east bound motorcycle coming towards her, she stopped her van, the driver of the motorcycle applied the brakes, causing the motorcycle to skid and eject the driver.

The driver of the motorcycle, Richard WARD, 52 years of age from London Ont, was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan and the passenger in the vehicle were not injured.

The 48 year old female driver from the Municipality of Shuniah was charged with Fail to Yield to Traffic on Through Highway contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
